Absentee voting

If you are unable to vote in person at your polling place on Election Day, you may vote by absentee ballot.

Absentee voting is available for all public elections, including general elections (every November), city elections (in May), primary elections and special elections (when called).

NOTE:Absentee voting does not apply to internal elections run by the Republican Party, such as City Committee meetings, party canvasses, district conventions and state conventions.

Who is eligible
In order to vote absentee, a voter must meet one of the allowable criteria. (Virginia does not allow unrestricted "early voting".) Reasons for voting absentee include:

  • illness or physical disability
  • absence from the City (for school, military duty, business, vacation)
  • work schedule
  • religious conflicts
  • caretaker obligations

How to vote absentee
A voter must apply to vote absentee. Ballots may be cast in either of the following ways:

  • By mail: Each step of the absentee voting process (application, ballot) is handled by mail. Requires adequate time for mail delivery. Read more about voting absentee by mail.
  • In person: All steps are handled in one visit to the City Elections Office. Read more about voting absentee in person.
