Absentee voting by mail

If you are eligible to vote absentee (see reasons), you may cast your absentee ballot by mail. This option requires several steps, so it's a good idea to get started early. (For a faster method, consider voting absentee in person.)

Step #1. Request an official absentee ballot application by calling the City Elections Office (703-746-4050) or by email (). Or you may download and print the form (PDF file, ~80 kb).

In the military or overseas?
If you're away from Alexandria because of active duty military status, or if you currently reside outside the U.S., you should use the Federal post card application to request your absentee ballot. Read more about military and overseas voting.

Step #2 Complete and sign the application, then submit it to the City Elections Office:

  • by U.S. mail (132 N. Royal St., Alexandria, VA 22314)
  • by fax (703-838-6449)
  • in person (132 N. Royal St., Old Town)
Please note that the absentee ballot application MUST be signed, and it MUST be received by the City no later than the Tuesday before Election Day.
Application deadlines for 2010
  • For the June primary election: Submit application by Tue., June 1, at 5 pm
  • For the Nov. general election: Submit application by Tue., Oct. 26, at 5 pm

Step #3 The City will then mail an absentee ballot to you at the address specified on your request form.

Step #4 Follow the instructions in the absentee ballot package, mark your ballot, and submit it in the envelope provided. You MUST submit the absentee ballot either by U.S. mail or in person -- not by fax or email. The completed ballot MUST be received by the City no later than Election Day.

Ballot deadlines for 2010
  • For the June primary election: Return completed ballot by Tue., June 8, at 7 pm
  • For the Nov. general election: Return completed ballot by Tue., Nov. 2, at 7 pm

To guard against mail delays, you should submit your request form as early as possible, and also return your absentee ballot as early as possible -- well before Election Day.

More information on absentee voting is available from the Alexandria City Elections Office and the Virginia State Board of Elections.
