Voting in Alexandria

Voters in Alexandria participate in elections for city, state and Federal offices. Elections for most City offices (mayor, Council, School Board) are held every three years. State offices are elected in odd-numbered years; Federal offices are elected in even years.

All general elections are held in November*. Primary elections (to nominate candidates) may be called in any year by a party committee; primaries are held in June, except that Presidential primaries are in February. Special elections (to fill vacancies) may be held at any time.

* - NOTE: Until 2009, elections for Alexandria city offices were held in May. But in June 2009, the outgoing City Council voted to change the election schedule, despite widespread public oppoisition. Starting in 2012, city elections will be held in November.

ARCC encourages all eligible Alexandria residents to register and to exercise their right to vote in every election. We invite you to meet our GOP candidates running at all levels, and to support their campaigns.
