Alexandria City government

The City is governed by a Mayor and 6-member City Council, all elected at-large for 3-year terms in spring elections. [Last election: May 2009. Next election: Nov. 2012.]
NOTE: In June 2009, the outgoing all-Democrat City Council changed the election schedule from May to November, despite overwhelming public opposition to the idea.

The City's constitutional officers are also elected at-large, but on a different schedule. The Commonwealth's Attorney and Sheriff are elected for 4-year terms, and the Court Clerk serves an 8-year term.
