Two victories for Council!
Alexandria voters elected Frank Fannon and Alicia Hughes to City Council in the city election on May 5. (See election results.) Their victories bring an end to the Democrats' solid lock on Council for the past six years.
Your vote counts in 2009!

Help us to elect new City Council members this year, and restore two-party government in Alexandria.

City voters will elect the following offices in the city election on Tue., May 5:

  • City Council - 6 members, elected at-large to 3-year terms
    GOP candidates: Phil Cefaratti, Frank Fannon
    GOP endorsed: Alicia Hughes
    [Incumbents: Ludwig Gaines (D), Rob Krupicka (D), Tim Lovain (D), Del Pepper (D), Paul Smedberg (D), Justin Wilson (D)]
  • Mayor - Elected at-large, to 3-year term
    [Incumbent: Bill Euille (D)]

For candidates: Republican candidates for Mayor and City Council must file with ARCC by Friday, Jan. 23, including a statement of candidacy, a filing fee ($500 for mayor, $250 for Council), and petitions with signatures of registered voters (100 for mayor, 50 for Council). Filing forms are available for download (see box at right). We encourage prospective candidates to contact us as soon as possible!

    10 am - 2 pm, at Minnie Howard
• SB filing deadline - Tue., Mar. 3
• Voter reg. ends - Mon., Apr. 6
• Abs. voting ends - Sat., May 2
• Election Day - Tue., May 5
    6 am - 7 pm, at all polling places
For voters: Republican voters will nominate candidates at a citywide GOP canvass on Sat., Feb. 7, from 10 am - 2 pm, at Minnie Howard School, 3801 W. Braddock Rd. (see map). Any registered City voter who believes in the principles of the Republican Party is eligible to vote in the canvass. There is no fee to participate, and no requirement to register in advance.

City voters will also elect School Board members in May:

  • District A - 3 members, elected to 3-year terms
    Incumbents: Sheryl Gorsuch, Scott Newsham, Eileen Rivera
  • District B - 3 members, elected to 3-year terms
    Incumbents: Yvonne Folkerts, Arthur Peabody, Marc Williams
  • District C - 3 members, elected to 3-year terms
    Incumbents: Ronnie Campbell, Blanche Maness, Charles Wilson

School Board elections are non-partisan, and political parties do not nominate candidates. Candidates for School Board must file with the City Elections Office by Tue., Mar. 3 (see details).
